Transportation
The lifeline of Cherokee County, I-85 runs through the city limits of Gaffney, contributing to much of the growth along Floyd Baker Blvd, the county's main thoroughfare, which bisects I-85. Much of the county's growth occurs along I-85. One of the nation's busiest airports, Charlotte/Douglas International Airport is located in nearby Charlotte 45 minutes away.
For regional and national air travel Greenville-Spartanburg Airport is located in Greer, SC about 40 minutes away. A study to determine the feasibility of building an airport in the county reveals that a general aviation airport is desperately needed in the county. Master Plan calls for runway size of 5,500 ft. Ultimately expanding to 7,000 ft. FAA approved site has been chosen. Site is north of Broad River, located between I-85 and US 29. Hwy 18 and Hwy 5 also provide easy access to the proposed site. Funding is provided by the federal govt. (95%), State of South Carolina (2 1/2 %) and Cherokee County (2 1/2 %).
The county is also served by US 29 which parallels I-85 and is mostly used for local traffic. US 29 also serves as a major road in the downtown area of Gaffney (Granard St.). US 29 North continues at the 5 Points Intersection and becomes Cherokee Avenue which runs through the main street of Blacksburg.
Several of the other major South Carolina highways that serve the county are: SC Highway 11, SC Highway 150, SC Highway 105, SC Highway 18 serve the Gaffney area. SC Highway 5 serves the Blacksburg area from York County (east) and Cleveland County (west) and intersects with I-85.

Nuclear Power Plant
On March 16, 2006 Duke Power announced that a Cherokee County site had been selected for a potential new nuclear power plant, to be called the William States Lee III Nuclear Generating Station. The site is jointly owned by Duke Power and Southern Company. Duke plans to develop the site for two Westinghouse Electric Company AP1000 (advanced passive) pressurized water reactors.
Each reactor is capable of producing approximately 1,117 megawatts. On December 14, 2007 Duke Power submitted a Combined Construction and Operating License to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, with an announcement that it will spend $160 million in 2008 on the plant with a total cost of 5-6 billion dollars.
This site will be adjacent to the old Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant site, which was never completed and ultimately abandoned. It was used by James Cameron as a set for the 1989 film The Abyss.
